An Indianapolis preschool teacher who was five months pregnant with child was shot five times by her ex-husband, leaving her in critical condition.
Kayla Netherland, a teacher at the Quality Preschool, was shot five times in the back and the lower abdominal area by Jeremy McBride, her ex-husband.
Netherland lost her baby as a result of the shooting and subsequent surgeries.
She underwent several surgeries including the removal of her left ovary, left fallopian tube, parts of her intestine, and part of her colon, said Corene Garcia of Shelbyville IN, who organized the fundraiser. Some repairs were also made to her uterus.
Kayla remains alive and not paralyzed but has been unable to move.
The fundraiser aims to raise funds to help Kayla’s family take care of her and cover other expenses including travel as she’s originally from Dallas TX.
Kayla had been excited over her impending delivery, according to posts from her social media pages.
She had shared photos of herself on Sunday, January 19, looking excited and looking forward to her delivery after crossing the halfway point of her pregnancy.
“Can’t believe we are already halfway through this pregnancy,” she had written on her Facebook page. “I’m so ready to meet you sweet baby girl!”
According to her family, Netherland had struggled to conceive in the past, increasing her excitement over the impending arrival of her daughter.
Kayla graduated Franklin Central High School and Ivy Tech Community College. She is the owner & decorator of Sweets n’ Treats, according to her Faceboo bio.
Her ex-husband, Jeremy McBride, is an Indanapolis native who is a radio technician at JES & Sons 2-Way LLC, according to his Facebook bio.
