St. Tammany Parish Sergeant Grant Candies Killed in High-Speed Chase

A St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office sergeant died after being hit by a fleeing car during a high-speed chase.

The pursuit began in St. Tammany Parish and ended in Orleans Parish near I-10 and Crowder.

The sergeant, identified as Grant Candies, was assisting in the chase when he was struck. Authorities say he was placing a spike strip on I-10 near the Oak Harbor exit to stop the suspects’ car. The vehicle hit him, causing fatal injuries.

The New Orleans Police Department confirmed that minors were inside the fleeing car. Emergency responders took them to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Sgt. Candies started his career with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office in March 2016, and prior to joining the Sheriff’s Office, he served in the United States Marine Corps.

Sgt. Candies also served as a Field Training Officer for his patrol shift, and in 2023 he trained seven recruits over the course of the year totaling 843 hours.

In 2023, prior to his promotion to sergeant, Deputy Candies was responsible for saving the lives of two individuals.

In one case, Deputy Candies was dispatched to a Slidell-area neighborhood in reference to a disturbance and a hit and run investigation. When Deputy Candies’ arrived at the location, he discovered an elderly white male with severe trauma to his lower right leg. The man had suffered critical blood loss because of the injury. Deputy Candies quickly applied his department-issued tourniquet to the subject’s leg. Had Deputy Candies not reacted quickly and resorted back to his training, the outcome of the subject’s life might have been different.

In a separate incident, Deputy Candies responded to a Slidell-area residence in reference to an unresponsive female. Upon Deputy Candies arrival, he assessed the female and interviewed people present at the residence. He quickly learned the female was a known abuser of illicit narcotics and realized the female was likely suffering from an opioid overdose. Deputy Candies ran to his unit to retrieve his department issued Narcan. Deputy Candies administered a single dose of Narcan, and the female immediately took a deep gasp and began breathing on her own. Once again, had Deputy Candies not reacted quickly and used his training, the subject likely would not have lived.

In 2023, Deputy Candies was also credited with helping to locate a vehicle reported stolen out of Mississippi and arresting the perpetrator after St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Louisiana State Police in reference to a stolen vehicle from Gulfport Police Department’s jurisdiction. Deputies on Deputy Candies’ shift were provided with the basic information of the vehicle as well as notified that a firearm was inside the vehicle.
