Sarasota man, Stephen Carega, faces backlash for harassing black teen post-Hurricane Milton

Stephen Carega, a Sarasota, Florida resident, has gone viral on social media after racially harassing a black teenager in the neighborhood.

The incident took place in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, when the teen, who was without power in his home, decided to take a walk while talking to his girlfriend on the phone.

During his walk, Carega and other white neighbors allegedly confronted the teen, questioning whether he belonged in the upscale neighborhood.

Despite the teen repeatedly assuring them that he lived in the area, the harassment continued.

In a video that has since spread widely online, Carega can be seen stopping his car near the teen, exiting the vehicle, and walking around to the passenger side, where he appears to reach for a weapon.

Fortunately, a friend intervened before any further escalation.

Carega works for the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) and many social media users have taken to LSEG’s X (formerly Twitter) page, calling for his dismissal.

The Sarasota Police Department has investigated the incident and concluded that no crime was committed, though the viral nature of the video has continued to fuel discussions on social media.
