Following a tragic incident on the Route 78 Freeway in Vista, near San Diego, a mother named Sandra Ortiz has been arrested.
Her two children, an unidentified 10-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, lost their lives as they ran onto the busy California highway to retrieve luggage that had fallen off their car.
The devastating incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, when the children exited their mother’s green GMC Yukon SUV after she pulled over onto the right-hand shoulder.
The car accident took place at high speed, resulting in the fatal collision.
They were trying to retrieve the suitcase that had flown off their car when they were both hit by a white Nissan Sentra.
The 41-year-old driver of Nissan car, who remained at the scene until authorities arrived, hasn’t been charged.
Meanwhile, the mom, Sandra Ortiz, — who stayed in the car as her children ran to the highway traffic — was arrested for a DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and child endangerment.
Authorities said they are still investigating the crash.
