Off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s deputy, Rafael Wordlaw has died following a shooting and crash on the city’s South Side.

The shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of East 67th Street in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

Police said the 31-year-old deputy was at a gas station when he was approached by another man. The men started arguing, and the offender took out a handgun.

Rafael Wordlaw also pulled out his gun and exchanged gunfire with the offender, who fled the scene on foot.

According to police, the deputy was shot in the chest and attempted to drive his vehicle, but crashed into a pole in the 6700 block of South Indiana.

He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

No one is in custody. Area One Detectives are investigating.
