Sammy Gyamfi the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also kicked against the government’s decision on setting ‘galamsey’ excavators ablaze as a way of fighting illegal mining in Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo-led government has assured Ghanaians that illegal mining in the country will soon be a thing of the past because it has intensified its fight against persons involved in illegal mining.
To prove government’s commitment in the fight against galamsey to protect our water bodies, lands and the environment at large, it has ordered that all excavators and all other seized equipment should be burnt on the concession site.
But according to Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, the burning of excavators is lawlessness.
The outspoken communication director has called on the government to sanction illegal miners according to the punishment provided under the Minerals and Mining Act.
He believes the 15-25 year imprisonment provided under the Mineral and Mining Act is more deterrent and effective in fighting the ‘galamsey’ menace than the burning of excavators.
