Starke man dies after crashing through fence, into tree off Clay County roadway

A man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Clay County early Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

An FHP crash report states around 1:45 a.m., a 44-year-old Starke man later identified as Papus Cook was traveling west in a pickup truck on Carter Spencer Road negotiating a curve when the vehicle left the roadway.

The truck went through a fence before crashing into a tree, troopers said.

Papus Cook was taken to Orange Park Medical Center where he was pronounced dead due to his injuries.

The report states Papus Cook was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
