Officer Andrew Duarte killed in the line of duty at UPMC Memorial Hospital shooting

A police officer was killed, and a gunman is dead after a shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township on Saturday.

Authorities confirmed the incident started at 10:43 a.m. when police received reports of an active threat inside the hospital.

West York Borough Police identified the fallen officer as Andrew Duarte. The department announced his death on Facebook, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

Ted Czech, public information officer for the York County Office of Emergency Management, stated that officers responded quickly and neutralized the threat. An investigation is now underway.

York County Coroner Pam Gay confirmed her office has been contacted about the shooting but has not released further details.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Officer Duarte had over six years of law enforcement experience.

He served with the West York Borough Police Department and previously worked for the Denver Police Department in Colorado.

During his five years in Denver, Duarte specialized in DUI and drug recognition enforcement.

He earned the Top Student Award in the 2019 Drug Recognition Expert school and received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Hero Award in 2021 for his work in impaired driving enforcement.

Duarte also served as an expert witness in numerous Denver County and District Court cases.

His skills included investigations, evidence handling, and legal writing.
