Two women Nakeeshia Strong and Capri Edwards were killed and three children were critically injured in a shooting in Chicago’s Grand Crossing neighborhood in the early morning hours on the Fourth of July, Chicago police said.
“So, unfortunately on this holiday morning, we find ourselves at the scene of another tragedy,” Don Jerome, Deputy Chief Area One said during a press conference Thursday morning.
Around 6:15 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 7100 block of South Woodlawn to a call of shots fired, Jerome said.
Upon arrival, officers discovered “multiple people” shot.
According to Jerome, a preliminary investigation revealed that two vehicles pulled up to a residence in the area, with multiple subjects exiting the vehicles and firing at the residence.
Multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene, along with a rifle and a handgun, Jerome added.
The shooting is believed to have stemmed from a “personal dispute,” Jerome said, noting that all victims were believed to be inside the residence when the shooting occurred.
Police did not release further information about the suspects or the vehicles involved.
