Warren police are investigating what they say is a murder-suicide of a mother and her 26-year-old son Sunday.
At about 8:22 a.m., officers responded to a report of a domestic assault at a home in the 13,000 block of Geoffrey, near 12 Mile & Schoenherr, according to a release from the Warren Police Department.
Police said a 33-year-old man called 911 and said his mother had pointed a gun at him shortly after he awoke.
A brief struggle ensued and the man ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
Officers tried to contact the mother at the home but she did not respond, police said.
Police said moments later, officers heard gunshots from inside the house, made entry, and found the mother allegedly had shot Kris Knox, her 26-year-old son with brain cancer and then herself.
Officers attempted life saving measures, but the mother and son were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
“From what investigators have learned so far, there does appear to be a mental health history with the mother,” police said.
Joan Knox, 70, of Detroit said she is the grandmother of Kris Knox. Joan Knox, who gathered in the neighborhood with other family members Sunday afternoon, called Kris, the youngest of two brothers and a sister, “her joy” and his mother a “sweetheart.”
“I called her my one and only daughter because I only have the one child (a son who’s Kris’ father). She was a great single mom, raised those children by herself,” Joan Knox said.
Knox said Kris had a tumor behind his eye.
“When he got sick about five years ago, he’d been suffering with bad headaches and doctors had been … giving him a prescription and sending him home,” Knox said.
Later, a tumor was discovered behind his eye about the size of a grapefruit, she said. He had two surgeries that reduced the tumor to the size of a chicken nugget, she said.
Warren police said investigators were confident there was no danger to the public.
Investigators and evidence technicians continued to process the scene and will be looking into the circumstances that led to the incident, police said.
