Misael Sanchez, a 29-year-old California soccer player died Monday of injuries he sustained in a massive brawl that broke out at a soccer match about two weeks earlier.
Misael Sanchez, of Port Hueneme, had been at the hospital since July 10 when he was beaten in a “large fight” that broke out between opposing team members and spectators on a soccer field at Oxnard High School, the Oxnard Police Department said in a release.
The match was played on July 10.
Sanchez, was one of the countless players involved in the fight that was sparked by a refereeing decision. A disagreement followed, and then came the melee, according to the Oxnard Police Department.
Sanchez was then attacked by a number of people and left unresponsive and not breathing by the time first-responders arrived on the scene.
Police said investigators are “still searching for witnesses or anyone who might have video recorded all or part of the fight.”
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office scheduled an autopsy Tuesday to determine the exact cause of his death.
Anyone with information about the game or the brawl is asked to contact the Oxnard Police Department.
