The Newton Police Department is investigating a tragic shooting that occurred on Monday afternoon, claiming the life of a high school student.
Around 2:00 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting on West Church Street.
When they arrived, authorities found two juveniles involved in the incident: a male and a female.
The female, later identified as 17-year-old Madisyn A’Miyah Evans, had been shot.
She was transported for medical care but sadly passed away from her injuries.
Madisyn was a junior at Newton County High School.
She was well-loved by her friends, teachers, and teammates. Known for her radiant smile and vibrant personality, she left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Newton Police Chief Randy Patrick confirmed that a person of interest is in custody.
The case remains under investigation as law enforcement works to uncover what led to the incident.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the Newton County Sheriff’s Department.
