Kyla Cooper: 24 year old Pregnant mother gunned down in Rockdale County neighborhood

A woman is dead after an overnight shooting in Rockdale County.

Rockdale County dispatch says a call came in just before 1 a.m. Thursday for a person shot at a home on the 2600 block of Golfview Terrace SE.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found 24-year-old Kyla Cooper dead from an apparent gunshot wound, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO).

Cooper had two children and was pregnant.

“I just talked to her today. I ordered her the Lyft. I feel messed up. I feel hurt,” said DJ, the victim’s cousin who didn’t want to reveal his last name.

DJ said the suspect took off but was taken into custody shortly after.

According to atlantanewsfirst.com, the shooting all started with a domestic dispute.

He said his cousin had showed up at her boyfriend’s house to tell him she was pregnant.

While she was visiting the house, her boyfriend’s other girlfriend showed up.

DJ said the two began to argue and then his cousin was shot.

Officials still have not confirmed DJ’s claims.

Detectives said their investigation led them to believe that the shooting occurred following an argument between Cooper and Arkia Tate.

Tate was arrested on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

A second individual, identified as Rashad Thompson, was also arrested for charges unrelated to the murder, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives spent hours processing the scene, collecting evidence, and talking to witnesses.

“I heard a lot of arguing. I heard some thumps and then I heard the shot. Then after the shot, a car alarm went off and I looked out the window and there was a car flying down the street with its lights off,” said Kamesha Smith, who lives across the street. “There was just a lot of screaming and a lot of crying.”

The incident remains under investigation by the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.
