A young mother and her infant child are dead after a crash with a semi-truck in Monroe County Tuesday morning.
It happened around 8:30 a.m. on Custer Road near Lewis Avenue in Raisinville Township, about halfway between Monroe and Dundee, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office says 19-year-old Journee Padgett of Jackson was headed east on Custer in a Chevy Malibu with her infant child in the backseat. At some point the Chevy crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into a semi that was heading west.
Padgett was pronounced dead at the scene, while the infant was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The semi driver, a 58-year-old Adrian man, was not injured.
Padgett and the semi driver were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and the infant was properly secured in a rear-facing car seat, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office says alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash, but it was not known what caused Padgett to cross the centerline.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division is continuing to investigate the crash and police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call 734-240-7557.
