A man is dead after he was struck by an SUV while trying to cross the street on a mini bike.
On Tuesday, police responded to calls of a man being hit by a car at the corner of South Palmetto Street and Schley Avenue on the East side.
When police arrived, they found a man in his early 20s with severe injuries after being struck by an SUV.
He sadly succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was later identified as Joey Chavez.
Investigators believe that the mini bike and the SUV were traveling Southbound on South Palmetto Street.
The mini bike, traveling at a high rate of speed on the sidewalk, attempted to cross Schley Avenue, onto the next section of sidewalk.
However, the mini bike had been in the blind spot of the silver SUV, and the driver did not see the bike until it was too late.
The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with police during the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
