The man responsible for killing a 22-year-old woman at Shelby Farms Park has been identified and charged, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).
Deputies said 26-year-old Jackson Hopper was booked at 201 Poplar and charged with first-degree murder. Investigators said more charges may come.
SCSO released Hopper’s mugshot before 7:25 Sunday morning.
Hopper has been identified as the victim’s ex boyfriend in an affidavit from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
A witness at the scene took a picture of Hopper’s parked white Honda CRV behind the victim’s Jeep at the time of the shooting.
The picture taken by the witness appeared to show the same Kentucky temporary tags seen in the photo on a license plate reader camera at the entrance of Shelby Farms Park, SCSO says.
The shooting happened near Shelby Farms Park’s visitor center as a popular breast cancer walk was going on nearby Saturday afternoon.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reports the shooting happened in the parking lot at around 12:15 p.m. before leading to a high-speed pursuit through multiple counties.
SCSO identified the victim as Ellie Claire Young, 22, of Henning, TN. Young was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, Hopper drove away. Officers in Dyer County later took him into custody after a police chase.
The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office says he attempted to run over one of its sergeants and even drove the wrong way into oncoming traffic.
