Gene Johnson, a group leader, counsellor, coach, and cherished member of the Camp Canadensis community, passed away on February 9, 2025.
The cause of his d*ath has not been revealed yet.
His passing has left the Illinois community, along with his close friends and family, deeply saddened.
Gene’s impact on those who knew him will be remembered for years to come.
He will be greatly missed by so many in the Camp Canadensis community, and our hearts go out to his family and everyone who loved Big Gene.
Gene made a lasting impact during his time at camp, always sharing his warmth and kindness with those around him.
The Camp Canadensis Facebook page shared the following message:
Hailing from Calumet City, Illinois, Gene attended Gavit High School, where he initially played basketball.
He later played college football, wearing shirt number 63 before switching to number 67.
Afterward, he attended Marian Catholic High School before transferring to Southland College Prep Charter High School.
In 2018, Gene was awarded the Certificate for attaining All-Conference from the Great Lakes Athletic Conference.
Following his graduation, Gene went on to Judson University on a football scholarship, where he played for the Judson Eagles.
He also served as a general bunk counselor on Freshman Hill in the summer of 2023 and was a group leader for the Super Senior Boys in 2024.
