A shooting during a Memorial Day event at Bill Faye Park in Kinston resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy, Dzyer Gooding.

Authorities are investigating the incident.

The shooting occurred on Sunday evening around 9:20 pm. Officers arrived at the park to find approximately 200 people gathered.

They located Dzyer Gooding, who had been shot and died at the scene.

Authorities say that it was determined that during the event an unknown number of assailants began exchanging gunfire with other members of the crowd and Gooding was struck by the gunfire.

Kinston Councilman Chris J. Suggs took to his Facebook page to share the tragic news of a teenage girl being fatally shot at a party held at Bill Fay Park.

Suggs expressed his condolences for the victim’s family and friends, as well as for the other individuals who were present during the incident.

He emphasized the importance of coming together as a community to put an end to such senseless acts of violence.
