Greg McCowan ( aged 43, born in the year 1981 ) was a Blount County Sheriff who was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop Thursday night, according to Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong.
McCowan graduated from the police academy in October of 2020, according to a post made by the sheriff’s department.
Less than a year on the job, he was accommodated for saving a man from a burning car.
On March 15, 2021, four deputies were sent to a vehicle fire on Defoe Circle where the driver hit a house with his car and the accelerator was still pressed to the floor causing a friction fire.
McCowan helped remove the man from the car and helped render aid.
He received the sheriff’s office’s Lifesaving Award.
“The Lifesaving Award is conferred upon a sworn or civilian employee who is directly responsible for saving a life, or where there is evidence that an employee’s actions prolonged a human life,” officials said.
What happened?
Deputy Greg McCowan was shot and killed during a traffic stop in the 4900 block of Sevierville Road. A female deputy was shot in the leg and returned fire. She was treated at an area hospital and released.
The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Kenneth Dehart. Warrants have been issued charging him with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and being a felon in possession of a handgun.
