William Floyd Coach Darrel Sumpter Killed in Shirley Crash

A fatal car crash on Sunrise Highway in Shirley, New York, claimed the life of Darrel Sumpter, 51, and injured two others.

The accident happened around 1:15 p.m. Friday between exits 57 and 58, according to police.

Officials say both vehicles involved in the collision overturned, leading to the closure of westbound lanes between William Floyd Parkway and Horseblock Road for several hours.

The William Floyd School District confirmed that Sumpter was the boys’ varsity assistant basketball coach.

Sumpter, a proud graduate of the William Floyd School District, was more than just a basketball coach.

He had been an assistant coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team since 2015 and was a pillar of the local sports community.

The school district described him as a dedicated mentor who had made a lasting impact on the lives of many student-athletes.

He was instrumental in starting the district’s youth basketball program and booster club, which has benefited countless boys and girls over the years.

“Darrel wasn’t just a coach,” said a school spokesperson. “He was a father figure, a motivator, and a role model for our students. His loss is a huge blow to the entire community.”
