A Cincinnati man identified as Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender has died after cliff jumping on Lake Powell within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on Thursday, according to the National Park Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender, 36, of Cincinnati died while cliff-jumping at Lake Powell, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Saturday.
The incident happened around 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Buoy 89 on Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the National Park Service (NPS) said in a news release.
Eyewitnesses reported that he jumped from a height of approximately 50 feet but did not resurface.
In response to the incident, the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area rangers, along with officers from the Utah Department of National Resources and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, conducted an initial search.
Subsequently, on Friday, the Utah Department of Public Safety Dive Team employed side scan sonar to locate Mr. Ehrnschwender, and divers were able to recover his body from about 30 feet of water.
“The National Park Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office express our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” the National Park Service and Kane County Sheriff’s Office said in a joint press release. “Also, appreciation to the Department of Public Safety Dive Team and Utah Department of Natural Resources for their quick response and assistance with this difficult operation.”
Officials said people who recreate on or around Lake Powell are prohibited to jump or dive from cliffs, ledges or man-made structures from a height of 15 feet or more from the surface of the water.
The incident is under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office and National Park Service.
