Officials have confirmed that a man found shot dead on Saturday morning in Orangeburg County was a Claflin University student.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to Legendary Drive after a caller notified 911 around 10:30 a.m. of a deceased man.
While investigators haven’t publicly identified the victim, the sheriff’s office said he was 20 years old.
Coroner Sean Fogle later identified the victim as 20-year-old O’Brian Grant.
A message from Claflin University to the campus community confirmed that Grant was a student.
A campus spokesperson confirmed the message.
“He will be deeply missed by the Claflin University community,” the university’s message said.
Claflin is offering free assistance and grief counseling to members of the university community, beginning on Monday. Counselors will be on campus throughout the week.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell described the killing as a “heinous” crime in a statement released on Sunday.
“If you have any knowledge or information on this murder, we are urging you to please call us,” he said.
