On October 20, 2024, Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a tragic single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 16 near LA Hwy 449 in St. Helena Parish.
The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. and claimed the life of 33-year-old Carey Austin of Independence.
According to the preliminary investigation, Austin was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 westbound on LA Hwy 16 when the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree.
Austin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the vehicle, who was restrained, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As part of the investigation, routine toxicology samples were taken from Austin to determine if impairment was a factor in the crash.
Troopers continue to emphasize the importance of safe driving practices, including avoiding impairment, fatigue, and distractions.
Louisiana law also mandates that all occupants of a vehicle wear seatbelts, which can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
