A man in Ohio identified as Bernard Edward Smith entered Giant Eagle supermarket and fatally shot his ex-wife who had been working there before turning the gun on himself.
According to the police in North Olmsted, they received a call on Sunday morning and upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Susan Peterson, 63, and Bernard Edward Smith, 60, on the supermarket floor.
They were said to be married to each other but divorced in 2004.
Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones of North Olmsted stated that the incident is being treated as a murder-suicide.
Mayor Dailey Jones also acknowledged that Giant Eagle has been a longstanding pillar in the North Olmsted community.
The shooting occurred at the Giant Eagle grocery store located on the 27000 block of Lorain Avenue in North Olmsted around 9:30 am on Sunday, as reported by the police.
Both the North Olmsted Fire and Police Departments responded to the incident.
Susan Peterson, who resided in Olmsted township, had been employed at the supermarket for nearly four years. At the time of the shooting, there were over 60 other employees present in the store.
During a press conference on Sunday, North Olmsted Police Chief Bob Wagner stated that officers swiftly entered the building within a minute of receiving the call and found two individuals on the ground.
Chief Wagner also mentioned that there were approximately 200 shoppers in the store at the time of the incident.
